Lessons From The Road

The road can take a lot out of a man.

I remember my first business trip. It was my first job, working for a bank in Dallas, and they sent me to Shreveport, LA for training.

First business rental car, first hotel, first expense report, first experience on the road.

They put me up in the Horseshoe Casino. I have to say, it was an interesting introduction to the working man’s world. Training was from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (bankers have great hours) and the rest of my time was spent trying to figure out what to do in the evening.

I had an expense report so I ate great every night and because I was bored I wandered onto the casino floor. Ok… so I didn’t just wander over there. A few drinks on the house as I played some blackjack sounded nice for a bit of evening entertainment.

It didn’t last long. I am not good at cards and loosing $100 pretty quickly made me wish I had bought a beer from the bar instead. The real struggle was back in the hotel room. You flip on the TV and there it is… the menu option. The word ‘Adult’ grabs your eyes and pulls you in like a bass on a spinner bait. Something inside a man comes alive, and the idea of porn sounds really good.

You are alone and whether you like to admit it or not, you have stared at your fair share of women throughout the day and sex is on the mind.

Your character is on the line.

I am now in ministry, my season in the business world is over for now but the struggle doesn’t go away. Even now when I travel for ministry the same menu comes up and the voice inside my head is still there. A lot has changed since my first business trip but even though I have committed more of my life to following Christ there is still the same temptation on the road. For pete sake, I am a man!

And so are you.

It is hard enough to be on the road. My latter business trips were not so relaxed. By the time you are back at the room you are exhausted and when you are tired your guard is down.

When David had an affair with Bathseba his guard was down. Rather than being off at war, where he should have been, he was idle and during his downtime he got off focus.

You have to maintain your focus, and that is why we have the FOCUS Online Study System. This way you can watch video and listen to audio from our weekly men’s Bible study. This is to help strengthen you at the office, on the road, and anytime you need to ‘get focused’.
