“And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light…” – Exodus 13:21

Security resides in restriction; they are almost never separated. The security one feels riding a train is related to the train staying on the track! Yet people demand autonomy and insist on security.

The above passage refers to the time the Lord lead the Israelites out of Egypt during the Exodus. Visualize with me the frustration that was felt among the people as they moved when the cloud moved and stopped when the cloud stopped. God’s presence was in the cloud and in the fire. The nation of Israel was secure as long as they remained under the cloud!

The cloud stops and you unpack your belongings, setting up your tent. The next day the cloud moves and you quickly gather your belongings so you can follow the cloud. Midday the cloud stops, and the next morning it’s again on the move! You say to yourself, “Next time it stops I am not going to unpack; it’s a waste of time!” So sure enough the cloud stops and you refuse to unpack and it does not move for a month! You get tired of living out of boxes so you give in and reluctantly unpack, and wouldn’t you know it, just as you finish the cloud decides again to move! Your frustration level just went off the charts and you think … “if only I had waited another day!” Don’t kid yourself; it does not work this way!

Where the cloud goes, you go. If the cloud travels in circles, so do you even if you think it may be leading you in the opposite direction! I know what you’re thinking: “You really don’t want to follow His leadership …it seems quite frustrating!” I get it!

But you and I still face a decision: “Do we want the autonomy to go and do as we please or do we want the security of God’s presence?”

Know This: You Cannot Have Both!

John 12:26 Jesus tells us, “If any man serve Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there shall also My servant be.” The servant of Jesus Christ follows Him, ministering with Him where He is. Only under “the cloud” are we secure.

Please take some time and think about what direction your life is going …do you want to do things the way you always have or is it time to make a change? It’s your decision!
