Billionaire Sam Wyly, made the, above, “headline” comment, about himself in his autobiography; Sam Wyly…“1000 Dollars and an Idea”.

Sam, as a successful entrepreneur – founder of Michaels Stores, Bonanza Steakhouses, Maverick  Capital and Green Mountain Energy, just to name a few of his enterprises – made a career, and a name, for himself by pursuing the future with an unfettered optimism – faith!

That perspective seems like a perfect theme for me, my family and The Master’s Men as we head into 2014. How about you?

If you are like me, I am worn out from the constant bombardment of bad news. I’ve bombarded myself by reading the news feed on my I-phone apps. My friends bombard me by sending me their “favorite” articles of bad news and I’ve done the same. Shame on me. What happened to my faith? God promised I could have His “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control”, if I walk in in His Spirit. What happened to that?

I need to get back to my roots; the one God gave me, in Christ, and seek the abundant life Christ offers me. Peter states, with convicting simplicity, God’s offer of the “abundant life”, in the following passage…

8all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.

Then, quoting the Psalmist, Peter continues his reminder…

10 For, “let him who means to love life and see good days refrain his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile. And let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and His ears attend to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil” 1 Peter 3:8-12

How can we do this? Here is a sure, 7 step, path to a happier and more prosperous year.

  1. Focus on the Glory of God, not the gore of this world  – Psalm 115
  2. Focus on the promises of God not the problems of life – Psalm 37:3-6
  3. Entrust your plans to His path for you – Proverbs 16:9
  4. Remember God is smarter than you, let Him direct you – Proverbs 3:5, 6
  5. When confused, call on Him for clarity – Jeremiah 33:3
  6. Set grand, God glorifying goals, as He has huge plans for you – Ephesians 3:20,21
  7. Be grateful and give the glory to Him! – Psalm 111; Isaiah 42:8

Though I have not changed my opinion of what I see and think about the trouble our country is in, though God’s revelation is not receding about His coming judgment, nonetheless I am convicted that I need to live an act in a more faith inspired way – with the hope of the gospel with which I have been entrusted.

Fact is, in American today, we have too much news and too much negative commentary. But that is no excuse for a poor attitude as a Christian. I don’t know about you but I found that I needed to repent of the excessive energy I expended on the angst of our world. I am not of this world any longer, I am of the Kingdom. Therefore, I need to pay more attention the things of the Kingdom than of the world.

How can I do that, without being a Pollyanna; by remembering this; As for the bad news being created by bad people, don’t worry, let it go and rely on this biblical promise; God knows how to protect you and prepare them for the day of “payment”! – 2 Peter 2:9

Happy New Year friends!
