I’m sure you have heard it said before that God is love and He loves you. And if you haven’t, well then hear it now. God is love and He loves you. And that is the truth. The only problem with that is sometimes we have a misunderstanding of what love actually is. And before we can truly comprehend who God is and what His nature is like, we must have a good grasp on the true meaning of love.
The best way to define love is to just open the Bible and flip open to a passage that summarizes it. The most notable passage describing love in the Bible is 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. It is as follows:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”
So there we have it. If God is love, then He is synonymous for love. Just plug His name into that definition:
God is patient, God is kind. He does not envy, He does not boast, He is not proud. He does not dishonor others, He is not self-seeking, He is not easily angered, He keeps no record of wrongs, He does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. He always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
And that’s that general idea. Now with a clear definition of love we can clearly see who God is for face value. He continually pursues a relationship with humans and for those of us who have chosen to pursue back, He clears us of our wrongs when we confess our sins, remembers them no more, and watches out for us in the highest manner. He is patient with us, always wanting to better our lives and situations.
And of course God is just and can demonstrate other righteous qualities, like judgment and wrath. But that is not to muddy our outlook on who God is because He truly is love. And if God is love, that is good news for us because that gives us a chance for mercy, grace, and all those other wonderful qualities that God demonstrated with His gift at the cross.
God is love. Are you?
